MENA-ICT hosting "Reality & the Cloud" What is Cloud Computing?!

“Cloud Computing” a keyword that has been exchanged on many occasions lately because of the MENAICT Forum on twitter and on Facebook, and if you’re like me, you’re probably thinking: “Huh?!” With a raised eye brow and a completely confused look on your face!

I logged on to the MENA ICT Forum website only to be further confused with the title of one of their sessions “Reality and the cloud”. With a brief introduction to the session that reads: “Building on massive regional broadband and access initiatives, individuals and organizations now have ample opportunities to access a continuously growing variety of online services that are based on cloud computing”

And that’s when I felt like a Flintstone, I’m probably going to be at the MENA-ICT Forum listening to all of those great diverse speakers go at the latest in ICT and I’m so eager to listen and to learn about what the future holds for us, but all of a sudden, I felt that I had a black cloud (no pun intended) shadowing over me and pushing me the shameful corner of ignorance, and hence, I decided to do some reading on my own, just to get a general idea, and well, I decided to share with you!

So Cloud Computing according to Wikipedia is Internet-based computing, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand, like electricity.

Still didn’t make much sense to me, but hey “Cloud Computing for Dummies” made it pretty clear that Cloud computing can be difficult to understand at first, but the cost-saving possibilities are great and many companies are getting on board. If you’ve been put in charge of implementing cloud computing, this straightforward, plain-English guide clears up the confusion and helps you get your plan in place.

So my friend Ruba has attempted to explain Cloud Computing to me through basic English language by throwing in an example: You know when you get an attached by email, and you can open it within your email platform, like opening word documents and excel sheets in google docs? That’s cloud computing, in a way!

So perhaps that black cloud is going away and I feel a tad bit more comfortable to dig a bit deeper! But not very deep; as I didn’t want to go back to being confused; so it turns out the next wave in computing is cloud computing, in which users access web-based applications via their web browsers. Google Docs is today’s most popular web-based application suite, but it’s not the only one available.

I found this video/illustration on YOUTUBE that makes Cloud Computing sound very simple:

What can I say? I’m really looking forward to listening to the sessions on Cloud Computing! Come back in a few weeks and read more about it… For the time being, consider winning a free pass to the MENA-ICT Forum by submitting a 2-3 minute video as Oasis 500 is generous enough to give away 30 passes to the conference! What are you waiting for?!
