Reality and the Cloud at the MENAICT Forum

“Cloud Computing” a keyword that has been exchanged on many occasions lately because of the MENAICT Forum on twitter and on Facebook, and if you’re like me, you’re probably thinking: “Huh?!” With a raised eye brow and a completely confused look on your face! Walid Halaweh is moderating the Session Reality and the Cloud, which started at the MENA ICT at around 5:00 p.m!

The first member of the panel speaking about Reality and the Cloud is Dr. Walid Abu Hadba CVP, Microsoft’s Developer and Platform Evangelism (DPE) Group, he leads the DPE’s efforts to build a vibrant solution ecosystem through evangelism community engagement and audience marketing. He believed that
”90% of R&D budget goes to Cloud Computing”, as a matter of fact Microsoft spends 9.5 Billions USD in Research & Development %90 of which in Cloud Computing

Followed by Mr. Mohammed Amin, VP and GM of EMC Middle East, North West East Central Afroca and turkey! With more than 1 billion PCs around the world today, he assumed that statistics will prove that in 2016 the world will have at least 2 billion pcs, which is around double what we have. Going for the cloud in his opinion, means a better infrastructure with an on-demand payment, which reducing at least 45% of his resources and utilizing 55% to add more resources via the cloud to their organization.

Moving on to the third member of the panel, Mr. Sachin Duggal, who become a young entrepreneur at the young age of 15 years old, he is one of the youngest in WEF Davos, and was awarded the history to win the Technology pioneers of 2009. Duggal is the CEO of NIVIO. “Cloud computing will hopefully reduce the amount spent on maintaining datacenters from 72% to 45% of budget” He said at the Panel.

Dr. Werner Vogels spoke about Amazon and the services they offer via Cloud Computing. In 2008, Vogels was one of the architects behind amazons Cloud Computing, “Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud” which brings to the world a virtual computing environment where web service interfaces are resizable and are designed to make web-scale computing easier for developers. Amazon’s Web Services (AWS) Cloud Computing is continuously promoted by Vogels for the past two years and still are throughout the world, through seminars, workshops and forums, such as Jordan’s upcoming MENA-ICT Forum where Vogels will be speaking.

The Session was concluded by a question where the attendees voted on the following questions:

In your organization considering using or developing cloud-based computing services?

46% yes in the 6 – 12 months
21% yes in the next 3-5 years
14% No, cloud computing is not going to work for us
20% No, we’re not sure what cloud computing is anyway

Last but not least; cloud computing has become much more than a buzzword – hardware, software, and communications companies are now successfully leveraging the on-demand, Web-based model to deliver sophisticated enterprise-class products and services in the cloud.

46% of the people attending the Forum said they are interested in adapting Cloud Computing within the next 3-6 months, do you think YOUR Organization is about to such a change?!
